On World Sexual Health Day (4 September), the World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates every person’s right to sexual well-being.

This year’s theme is consent.

WHO says: “Consent is a crucial element of any healthy sexual encounter, and we must educate ourselves and others on what it means, how to express it, and how to obtain it.

“In addition, it is essential to respect and value everyone’s autonomy and choices in sexual matters, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or any other factor.”

Dr Claire Tanner, Senior Lecturer in Gender Studies and Sociology, Monash University says:  “‘Consent’ is a critical element of, not just legal, but positive and empowering, sexual encounters.

“What consent looks like, how it can be communicated and recognised, is not necessarily straightforward given the messy realities of sexual intimacies and exchanges, which are also shaped by powerful gendered norms and expectations.

“This highlights how critical conversations about consent are – not just in the bedrooms of intimate partners, but in courtrooms, the offices of policymakers, and in schools where ideas about what consent is and looks like are made and re-made.

“What comes of these conversations has grave implications, not least for the more than one in five women who currently experience sexual violence in our society.

“Increasingly, key spaces where messages about sex, bodies and consent are being circulated are on social media, where different platforms are enabling informal forms of sex education to take place.”

More than 250 supplier partners gathered for TerryWhite Chemmart’s (TWC) annual Supplier Forum, which was held in Melbourne on 26 July.

During the forum, TWC unveiled key plans and initiatives that drive better business outcomes for TWC Network Partners while ensuring a strong return on investment for its supplier partners.

The event showcased new marketing initiatives, education and training programs, and CareClinic offerings aimed at fostering better health outcomes for communities nationwide.

Investing in health and care

Nick Munroe, TWC Executive General Manager, acknowledged the essential role played by the supplier partners in understanding the evolving needs of customers and investing in programs that drive better health outcomes.

“Our 550-plus communities benefit greatly from the ongoing belief and investment delivered by our key supplier partners. Together, we are navigating the changing landscape of health and care across Australia,” he said.

Empowering with innovation

As part of their commitment to enhancing customer experience, TWC shared their roadmap for augmenting both the physical store network and the digital presence.

A notable focus was on increasing investment in the myTWC health app, eCommerce, and digital marketing initiatives to retain existing customers and attract new ones.

TWC emphasised the success of the recently launched TWC Care Clinic program.

Through core services across vaccinations, health checks and medication services, along with exclusive partnerships with key suppliers like Sanofi and Metagenics, the programs offer specialised health services targeting chronic and acute conditions, ultimately delivering better patient outcomes and significant returns on investment.

Partnering with Ovarian Cancer Australia

TWC’s commitment to giving back to the community was highlighted by its ongoing support for its charity partner, Ovarian Cancer Australia (OCA).

Over the past year, the brand raised over $322,000 for the charity, more than doubling previous contributions.

This achievement was bolstered by a new supplier and brand-led initiative embraced by 19 leading pharmacy brands, the TWC network and customers who shopped the ranges.

“Our partnership with Ovarian Cancer Australia spans 18 years, and it is through the support of our pharmacy network, customers and dedicated supplier partners that we can make a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by this devastating disease,” Mr Munroe said.

TWC’s call to action

TWC invites its supplier partners to continue with them on a journey of innovation and purpose and provides suppliers with a unique opportunity to drive and position their investments to help TWC attract more customers to the pharmacy network.

Friday 1 September 2023 is Walk to Work Day supporting Diabetes Australia. The event encourages employees and employers to build regular walking into their daily routines.

Celebrating its 23rd year, the annual event encourages workplaces to walk to and from work, take a walk at lunchtime, and use the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator.

With millions of Australians living with all types of diabetes or at risk of type 2 diabetes, there has never been a better time to get walking and start on the path to a healthier workplace and a healthier you.

How you can get involved

It’s easy to get involved in Walk to Work Day. Here are a few suggestions:

  • If you can’t walk all the way, use public transport and get off the bus, train, tram or ferry a few stops earlier and walk the rest of the way to work.
  • If you do need to drive, leave the car a kilometre or two from your destination and walk the rest of the way.
  • Take a half-hour walk at lunchtime.
  • Where possible use the stairs rather than escalators or the lift.
  • If you sit at a desk, be sure to get up and walk around at least once every hour.
  • Get up and talk to your colleagues instead of sending them emails.
  • If working from home, make sure you take a break and take a walk throughout the day.
  • Rather than holding meetings around a table or over Zoom, host a “walking meeting”.
  • Challenge your workmates and compare your step stats in the lead-up to the day.

Diabetes Australia promotes a healthy lifestyle

Walk to Work Day supports Diabetes Australia by raising awareness for the organisation.

Diabetes Australia is the national body for the 1.5 million Australians diagnosed with diabetes as well as people at risk. They are committed to reducing the impact of all types of diabetes.

The organisation works in partnership with people with diabetes, health professionals and researchers. In the last 12 months, 120,000 Australians have been diagnosed with all types of diabetes. It is the fastest-growing chronic condition in Australia and can lead to a range of costly and debilitating complications including vision loss, limb amputation and kidney and heart disease.

Diabetes Australia promotes regular walking as a healthy activity that can help people lower their risk of type 2 diabetes and help people living with diabetes manage the condition. The organisation promotes better physical, mental and social health for all Australians and encourages:

  • Reducing the reliance on the private motor vehicle (reduce car dependency).
  • Promoting and improving the use of public transport (less traffic).
  • Improving air quality and the environment by reducing unnecessary vehicle emissions.

All workplaces are encouraged to get involved in Walk to Work Day Supporting Diabetes Australia.

Wizard Pharmacy Mount Pleasant was crowned Wizard Pharmacy of the Year 2022 at the group’s annual awards night at Optus Stadium, beating all other Wizard Pharmacies across Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

Being the core pharmacy in their suburb, the pharmacy team have leapt at the opportunity to participate in community events, including engaging with local primary schools, high schools and GP clinics and producing a 3-day Wizard Mentoring program for year 11 and 12 students interested in studying pharmacy.

The pharmacy has only been trading for a year, but in that time, they have achieved a 100% Mystery Shopper score, have 500 scripts on file and are sitting well above the group average in Rewards transaction rates.

Franchisee Frank Napoli, whose other pharmacy, Joondalup Upper, was in the top 25 of Arrotex’s 2022 Community Pharmacy of the Year awards, says that the team is very grateful and truly honoured to be crowned Pharmacy of the Year, especially with the strong competition.

“For a pharmacy that’s only been open just over a year, we’re all so thankful for how warmly the community has welcomed us and for the amazing opportunities to engage with and enrich the local community.

“I am so proud of my team, the culture they have created and how hard they have worked to serve their customers and patients in such an authentic and personalised way, despite the challenging conditions the healthcare industry has experienced,” said Mr Napoli.

Maxwin Chong from Wizard Pharmacy Cannington was crowned Pharmacist of the Year for his dedication and passion for his patients and the growth of his team.

(L-R) Sally Parker COO, Maxwin Chong, Lyndon Dyson CEO.

He is consistently looking for new ways to engage with his community- supporting local high schools and universities by taking an active role in their student’s work experience and even making home medication deliveries to his patients.

Mr Chong has delivered over 2800 COVID-19 vaccinations and over 800 flu vaccinations in the last 12 months.

“I was astounded when my name was called during the Awards night as so many pharmacists have worked so hard and given so much to their communities- beyond what they are required to do.

“I have to say a huge thank you to my team, who have all played such a significant part in serving the community with me during times of unprecedented crisis.

“I am proud to say we have not shut our doors once to the community since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mr Chong.

Alice Muge of Wizard Pharmacy Kelmscott Stargate was awarded the group’s first Intern of the Year award after participating in the group’s 2022 Pharmacist Intern Program.

Other awards presented on the night include:

  • Team Member of the Year – Emma Ewers from Wizard Pharmacy Girrawheen.
  • Leader of the Year – Breannah Board-Smith from Wizard Pharmacy Riverton POD.
  • Wizard Pharmacy Services Team Member of the Year – Amelia Tuttleby (Marketing Coordinator).
  • Supplier Representative of the Year – Jade Keppell from Metagenics.
